Vitamin D Results Back from Doctor

by Mandy
(North Carolina)

Hey! It's been awhile since I have typed to you. Wanted to let you know that I did have my vitamin D levels checked at the doctor and my levels were normal & good, according to what my doctor said!

You asked me to get my levels checked. That would be one of the first steps to figuring out my health and getting it back on track.

I also found out I was pregnant about a month ago! I am now 8 weeks pregnant! We are very excited but I want to be healthy for my baby! I am taking a prenatal vitamin as the doctor recommended.

My neck glands are sore today. I am hoping I am not coming down with an infection. Can I take more Vitamins than I am taking from the pre-natal Vitamin? And if so, which would you recommend?

I have been trying to go by "the Maker's Diet" as best I can even though it hasn't been perfect! I am trying though. I have been also trying to walk everyday for about 30 minutes! Once we move back to our hometown, I will probably start swimming a little as the doctor recommended that for exercise while pregnant.

I haven't had too much morning sickness SO far & am hoping I can be one of the lucky ones & not experience it at all. I did have an upset stomach and a little nausea for about a week but then it subsided.

Anyway, any advice on my next step would be great or any advice on anything I just mentioned, I would greatly appreciate! Thanks for your help in trying to better my health! It is truly a blessing! :)

Mandy

RESPONSE

Hi Mandy,

Congratulations on the pregnancy! Obviously I am not in any position to recommend nutrition during your term. You need to listen to your doctor for guidelines on prenatal nutrition.

As far as the vitamin D results - what were they?

Most doctors are not up on the latest research on vitamin D. This means they tend to not be aware about the new guidelines on proper vitamin D levels.

It is VERY important for your vitamin D levels to be optimal for the sake of your baby.

So many new moms are vitamin D deficient that their babies are being born with rickets (soft bones).

This also means that the babies being breast fed are also still not getting the vitamin D they need. So we need to be sure that your levels are in fact at a healthy level.

So you'll need to ask the doctor what test he/she ordered and what the results were (the actual number).

Doctors frequently order the wrong test, the 1,25-dihydroxy-vitamin D test, thinking it is the more informative one. But odds are good this test won't show a deficiency even if there is a severe one.

You'll need the more accurate 25-hydroxyvitamin D test. This test is will give you the best overall picture of your vitamin D status.

So let me know in the comments below which test was ordered and what the actual results were.

You paid for the test, you are entitled to know all the details about it so you can make your own decisions.

If I were you, I would want to be 100% sure that your levels are in the optimal range.

Wishing you the best of health,

Melissa
